Today in class, we discussed the concept of 10,000 hours. This is a concept that states people become experts at what they do after they have spent 10,000 honing and crafting their skills. Bill Gates and The Beatles are famous examples of people who have put in their 10,000 hours in order to become experts in their respective fields.
Music students are certainly not expected to become experts in music by putting in 10,000 hours of practicing. However, by keeping this notion in the front front of our minds, it may help us remember why we need to practice and prepare for all that we do. It may help us all be more successful in our endeavours because we are aware that the great ones didn't become talented over night.
People may disagree over where it is shear good luck or innate talent that drives one to be successful. Either way, it is hard to deny that there may be some truth to the fact that insanely talented or not, one still needs to practice and refine their skills.
